Blackenstein has appeared in skits on Saturday Night Live and on MADtv where he was re-dubbed " Funkenstein ". The movie was referenced in the 2003 South Korean film Save the Green Planet! . Blackenstein is given a surprisingly serious scholarly examination as an aspect of a larger cultural perspective in Elizabeth Young's Black Frankenstein: The Making of an American Metaphor published in 2009 as part of the America and the Long 19th Century series from New York University Press . Blackenstein was first released on video in the late '70s by Media Home Entertainment and again on DVD and VHS by Xenon Pictures in 2003. Severin Films released the blu ray on May 30, 2017; fully restored, it features two versions of the film: the theatrical release, at 78 minutes, and the video release, at 87 minutes. Extras include the original theatrical trailer, as well as numerous interviews.
Christopher Vogler , a Hollywood film producer and writer, wrote a memo for Disney Studios on the use of The Hero with a Thousand Faces as a guide for scriptwriters; this memo influenced the creation of such films as Aladdin (1992), The Lion King (1994), and Beauty and the Beast (1991). Vogler later expanded the memo and published it as the book The Writer's Journey: Mythic Structure For Writers , which became the inspiration for a number of successful Hollywood films and is believed to have been used in the development of the Matrix series.
